Midwest Regional Barista Competition

On January 19th, baristas from all over the midwest gathered in Kansas City for a showdown. Think Iron Chef, only with espresso. Each Barista has exactly 15 minutes to prepare and present 12 drinks: 4 traditional cappuccinos, 4 espresso, and 4 signature beverages. Signature beverages can be made with anything except alcohol, and they should taste predominately of espresso. Baristas present their coffees to a panel of 7 judges, who evaluate them on technical skill, presentation, and most importantly, taste.

St.Louis wasrepresented by three baristas: Louis Barrale and Erika Darrough from Cairdeas CoffeeHouse in Clayton, and Alex McCracken, our Barista Trainer. Erika and Lou competed for the first time and did very well. They displayed solid technical skills, served terrific drinks, both completing their impressive routines with time to spare.

Alex was planning on doing a cowboy-themed routine, but decided against it at the last minute. This turned out to be a good decision, as he wound up in the top three, taking 2nd place.
Congrats!

Thanks to all the Kaldi's Baristas who came out to support Alex, Lou, and Erika!
