Espresso Mania! This Friday we will have multiple individually roasted coffees set out to prepare our own espresso blends. This session will begin with a brief discussion on espresso blending, break out into small groups to create our blends then espresso mania begins. Thank you everyone for attending the Cupping. I can say for myself that I enjoyed the diversity of characteristics represented by nature of the growing regions and processing that occur in Indonesia. The selections consisted of Hawaii Kauai, Papua New Guinea - Kimel A, Sumatra Mandheling - Grade 1 Triple Pick and Fair Trade Organic Sumatra Gayoland. The Hawaii presented a sweet balanced cup, some comments were bread-like and nutty. Again, the Papua stole the show. Papua New Guinea had an intensly sweet raisin fragrance right off the bat and followed with a savory sweet aroma that was likened to teriyaki. The cup was bright currant acidity, honeyed sweetness balanced with a savory, medium bodied aftertaste, in the past it has been likened to tomato sauce or a steak dinner with the red wine included. If you have not tried this coffee you are truly missing out on one of the great experiences in life. Now for Sumatra. The Sumatra offered a leathery sweetness balanced with a traditional black soil component. The FTO Sumatra Gayoland offered a similar profile but with a hint of currant.

For our Friday cupping we will exploring the varied dimension of Indonesian and Island coffees. The coffees will include Papua New Guinea - Kimel A (the Rodney Dangerfield of our selection), Hawaii Kauai, Fair Trade Sumatra Gayoland and Sumatra Mandheling - Triple Pick.
